House in Mountain Brook
In 1950, a small but pioneering modern house was built in Mountain Brook, Alabama – not a typical thing in that place at that time. By 2017 it was dilapidated, presumably a ‘tear down’ sure to be replaced by a predictable McMansion. It was bought, however, by a couple interested in its mid-century bones. Tasked with doubling its size, C+H placed the new addition a distance away, reaching over to delicately link with the old, careful not to injure the thing it touched. The old bones were edited and restored to create a new open plan space in the same spirit as the original.
